Social network sites such as Facebook, MySpace, or personal blogs are improving the lives of individuals and the function of communities by giving people many opportunities to express themselves and to meet people who have the similar interests.
There’s a term named cultural inversion, which means more people turn into individualism, but more people long for their own communities (Wesch, 2008). In other words, more people become independent but also more people want strong relationships. Social network sites such as Facebook or MySpace give them opportunities to show their interests and thoughts to others. People choose what they want to share with others and this process encourages people to improve the lives of individuals. Some people worries about that people might wear masks and create fake identity. However, social network sites help people show themselves to others no matter where they live or how old they are, and it can improve individuals’ lives.
Besides, social network sites is a great way to keep in touch with people and also it helps creating communities for people who want to meet new people with similar interests. For example, in 2008, Barak Obama, who was one of candidates for American president, used his blog to connect with his supporters and talked about new campaign strategies (Dye, 2009). It is shown that social network sites can improve the function of communities. Some people said social network site doesn’t create the real communities. However, more people vote on US election and this shows that people, who use social network sites, create the communities and involve in society actively.
Thus, social network sites improve the lives of individuals and help communities running well.
